From Daughter to Mother, handmade on the Isle of Wight
Sea glass collecting provides a fantastic activity for children while on holiday or when visiting the beaches across the Isle of Wight.
During a recent visit to Shanklin beach, my granddaughter was lucky enough to find a small piece of sea glass walking on the beach with her nanny.
We thought it would be a lovely idea to shape the sea glass and to create a simple necklace design for Nyla to give to her mother on her birthday.
This precious gift held enormous value, not intrinsic value, but in the time, story and meaning behind the necklace.
Most sea glass occurs in irregular shapes. Many create unusual necklaces for this reason, but sometimes a little shaping helps to even the piece out into a workable pendant design. At the same time, a finely drilled hole using a diamond coated drill-bit, allows a small hole suitable for a handmade silver bail to be added to the glass.
The final necklace provided a beautiful keepsake. Affordable, and at the same time, sentimental and a marvellous memory of a birthday, the love of a daughter, time with a granddaughter and a keepsake from home on the Isle of Wight.
We have a selection of ready-made sea glass jewellery from the Isle of Wight in our Ryde showroom. We collect each piece on our walks with family across the beaches and fashion items into unique and individual pendants.
