We recently created a unique Opal necklace, set with Diamonds and Aquamarines as part of a bespoke jewellery commission. The design we made for Wendy, a local lady who lives on the Isle of Wight. She visited our showroom with family to discuss the option of turning an existing Opal ring into a necklace design, to give the gemstone a new life—held within a design she would wear.
What is Opal?
Opal, a mesmerizing gemstone, originates from silica-rich solutions that seep into crevices of ancient rock formations. Its captivating beauty arises from microscopic spheres diffracting light, displaying a kaleidoscope of colours, known as play-of-color.
Opals enchant with their iridescence, ranging from fiery reds to tranquil blues, making each gem a natural masterpiece.
In this instance, the Opal we worked with featured reds, blues, greens and yellows depending on the angle caught by light entering the translucent cabochon gem.
The Opal Ring
The original ring features a 22mm long Opal, held within a bezel or rubbed-over setting. The design was simple, with shoulder detail as seen in our photographs below.
Re-Modelling the Ring into a Necklace
A Transformational Piece of Jewellery
The final necklace design created from the CAD images, totally transformed the Opal, giving it a new lease-of-life. Most importantly, it provided Wendy with an item of jewellery she would wear, treasure and love.
This is perhaps the most important part of re-modelling jewellery designs. Unworn, unsuitable and often forgotten items undergo a transformation into brand new designs.
