Frequently Asked Questions
A few of the common questions we are asked about jewellery repairs.
Do you repair chains?
Some chains can be repaired. In contrast, other styles cannot be repaired. We are often unable to repair broken snake chains and very fine trace chains owing to the fragility of of the links. Please bring your chain in to us to get advice on the possibility of providing a repair.
What about broken catches?
We provide a replacement service for broken catches. In addition we can provide larger trigger catches making necklaces easier to fit. We are unable to repair most catches, but will be happy to advise on the cost of a replacement catch in either Silver or Gold.
What types of ring repairs do you offer?
Ring repairs vary enormously. Some of the repairs we carry out include reshaping distorted rings, adding thicker sections to worn bands, re-tipping broken claws and laser repairing breaks in settings and shanks.
Can you add a new catch to my necklace?
Yes we can. We add new catches for necklaces in Gold and Silver. In addition, we can replace existing catches with larger types, or we can source magnetic clasps for anyone having difficulty with existing catches.
How much do you charge for repairs?
Prices vary enormously depending on the work required. We recommend bringing your item to us. We will discuss your requirements, advise and quote on any work required. Some quotes take around one week to organise if we send away to our UK workshops. Once approved, a repair can take around 2 weeks to complete.
How long do repairs take?
Repairs carried out in our Ryde workshop on the Isle of Wight, take around 1 week to complete. Repairs sent away to our specialists UK mainland workshops can take around 2-3 weeks to complete, with one week to organise the initial quote for work to be carried out.
What happens to unrepairable items?
If your jewellery cannot be repaired, we can provide guidance and suggestions. These range from a new, replicated jewellery design, to re-using existing metal and gemstones to create a new item of jewellery.
Should I bring my jewellery with me when I visit?
Without seeing your jewellery, we are unable to offer any specific guidance or quotes. Please ensure you have your item with you when you visit us in Ryde.
Do you replace missing diamonds?
Yes we do. We can replace missing diamonds and gemstones, matching up the shape, size and quality. In addition, we can offer lower cost alternatives such as lab-grown diamonds where the budget for repair does not allow for a natural diamond replacement.
Can you put a larger ring or catch on my chain?
Yes we can. We regularly add larger catches, clasps and rings to jewellery, especially helpful for older clients who struggle with small catches and jump rings. Please drop in with your item and we can advise on the work and cost.
Do you send jewellery away?
Some items we repair and refinish in our showroom workshop. Other repairs require advanced equipment and technical expertise which we send to our UK mainland workshop in the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter where work is carried out by expert Goldsmiths who specialise in precision repairs to fine jewellery.
