Remodelling a Ring - Remaking Jewellery from Old to New

As part of our work, we remodel rings, from engagement and wedding rings to eternity and dress rings. This service includes remaking rings, a subject already covered in depth on the Serendipity Diamonds blog.

Why remodel a ring?

But why do people remodel rings? Reasons vary considerably from one person to another. Some clients inherit outdated or worn rings. Rather than leaving them to gather dust in a jewellery box, we repurpose and recycle the Platinum, Gold, and gemstones into a new design.

Modernising an engagement ring

Reasons vary, and some clients may choose to redesign their original engagement ring into a more contemporary design. Perhaps the ring belonged to an elderly relative and was passed along through family generations.

Remodelling signet rings

We sometimes remodel old signet rings, either to transform the design, or replicate the design. Our example below was remodelled from the original signet ring owing to a change of name following marriage.

Re-using old gold for sentimental reasons

Re-using old Gold or Platinum is not always a cheaper option. As part of this service, we separate the existing Gold from all other Gold in our workshop to cast the new item. This is less complex if the new item can be fashioned easily from molten Gold or Platinum. However, the process becomes more complicated when we CAD design an item.

Making an engagement setting larger

Occasionally, clients ask us to add diamonds or a larger diamond to their engagement ring. This process often involves adding a new setting to their existing band. For example, when transforming a solitaire ring design into a halo engagement ring style, we remove the original setting and remodel the ring into a halo design. At the same time, we provide the surrounding diamonds for the halo.

We created an Opal, Diamond and Aquamarine necklace from an old Opal ring no longer worn.

Re-purposing wedding rings

We frequently recycle or repurpose wedding rings. We use existing precious metals to make new jewellery designs, such as using wedding rings to create necklace designs.

Rings that cannot be resized

What happens when an unsizable ring becomes too large or too small? Styles include full eternity rings or rings with fine bands unsuitable for sizing. We regularly remodel such rings into the same ring design, or a brand new jewellery design. If our client wants the original ring, we offer suggestions for resizing it. This sometimes involves removing existing diamonds or gemstones to add a new section into the ring.

Adding a more secure setting for diamonds and gemstones

Another reason for remodelling a ring involves redesigning rings. The loss of a diamond often causes worry over an existing ring design. We can create similar ring designs with alternative setting styles to secure diamonds or gemstones.

We re-modelled the ring shown below to improve the security of the diamond settings after our client lost one of the Marquise-cut diamonds.
